Year 7 Maths Information Evening

In 2017, Marcellin College implemented a new learning program for Year 7 Mathematics called Maths Pathway. In a recent edition of The Eagle, Mr. Andrew Bryson, the Assistant Principal (Learning), shared details about this program. In this article he stated, “The aim of this program is to provide students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills within Mathematics by learning content on a continuum that is targeted at their level of understanding and skill set.”

It was also explained that based on educational research there is a growing expectation within schools that every student has the opportunity to gain a year’s worth of progress by the end of each year school year. Research also indicates that traditionally in schools, it has been extremely difficult for one teacher to cater to the various learning needs of all individual students. As a result, not every student has experienced success in Mathematics.

Drawing from such research and wishing to provide the best learning outcomes for our students, our Maths teachers are using this new tool, Maths Pathway to identify where students are at with their learning and to provide them with the required learning to deepen their learning in Maths. Further to students learning new Mathematics skills, they are also continuously setting learning goals and gaining feedback on their growth, effort and accuracy, providing them with a learning platform that values a growth mindset and student-centred approach to learning.

Evidence collated from the use of this program by our Year 7 students in 2017 has shown that on average students gained 1.4 years’ worth of learning. That is, on average students gained an additional 4-5 months of learning in Maths throughout 2017.

By using this next-generation online textbook and assessment system, your son’s maths lessons will be tailored to precisely what he is ready to learn. This includes learning activities designed to consolidate prior learning as well as to extend his knowledge and skills. Your son will complete work individually in their maths exercise book, guided by questions and videos via Maths Pathway tutorials. His teacher will spend less time lecturing to the whole class and more time working with small groups and individuals. This will further support your son with his learning in Maths.
