Message from the Principal - 27 November 2017

27 Nov 2017

Dear members of the Marcellin College Community,

Last week it was reported to me that a former teacher of Marcellin College has been convicted of one count of historic Child sexual abuse. The teachers name was Vili Kovac and the abuse occurred during the period of his employment at the Camberwell Campus of Marcellin College between 1968 and 1969.

I am greatly saddened and appalled by this news and on behalf of our community offer my deepest apologies to those who have been affected by this criminal act of betrayal.

Marcellin College in association with Marist Brothers Australia are committed to helping those who have suffered abuse in the past, find healing in their lives today.

To that end, we encourage anyone who may have suffered past abuse to contact the Professional Standards Office of the Marist Brothers for assistance.

Our commitment also extends to fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation of abuse, no matter where or when it may have occurred. We strongly urge any person who has any evidence of criminal conduct to contact their local police and report it so that it can be appropriately investigated.

Marcellin College in conjunction with Marist Brothers Australia fully support the important work of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sexual Abuse in giving voice to those who have suffered abuse, identifying the causes of such abuse and recommending action now and for the future.

Our greatest concern is for our boys and, as ever, we prioritise their wellbeing and that of our Old Collegians. In this regard the College remains committed to Child Safety Standards, ensuring that incidents of this nature never happen again. I would like to reassure the Marcellin community that we treat these matters with the utmost seriousness and have strict and clearly communicated policies around reports of abuse.

If you require any further information or support, please contact the College.
