Year 8 Reflection Day

As part of the Year 8 Religious Education Program, students will be participating in a Reflection Day facilitated by R.E. Staff with the support of Year 12 students who have chosen to participate in these days for their Year 12 R.E. Christian Service Option.

The theme for the day, `The Sower and the Seed’, takes its inspiration from Jesus’ parable of the same name. The program will link with topics that students have covered in R.E. classes and invite them to reflect on how their actions can dramatically impact not only themselves and other people, but ultimately on the adults that they become.

As students look at the parable of the Sower and the Seed, they will be provided with opportunities to reflect on the choices that face young people today. Presentations and discussions will focus on factors influencing their decision-making process, the consequences of good and bad decisions, and positive and negative role models. The program invites students to reflect on the type of people they aspire to become and operates from our central belief that each person is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), with the inherent dignity that this implies.

In order to channel this focus, as part of the day students will view the film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (2016). This movie looks at issues of decision-making and the impact that it can have on a person. Students will be asked to reflect on their thoughts and experiences in relation to peer pressure, acceptance, tolerance and effective communication. The value and importance of making good decisions and developing strategies that support students to grow into good Christians and good citizens, form the basis of these Reflection Days.
