Debating is an important activity offered to all students. Apart from aiding skills in research, logic and clear thinking, debating develops self-confidence, fluency and team work. Marcellin promotes teams at all year levels and organises inter-school debates as time allows.
Marcellin has teams competing in the School Competition of the Debating Association of Victoria, a Catholic Schools Competition, as well as entering students as individuals for students and all students are warmly invited to participate.
We value the arts, encouraging all students to develop their creative and design thinking, curiosity and abilities. The College offers studies in Art, Digital Film, Drama, Music, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Theatre Studies and Visual Communication Design. These areas also generate a rich variety of co-curricular opportunities.
Individual tuition is available in a broad range of instruments, voice and public speaking. Our many musical ensembles include string orchestras and quartets, concert bands, choir, stage bands, brass and the symphonic orchestra.
Marcellin enjoys a strong reputation in the community and our annual musical productions are always a highlight. We have developed a partnership with Our Lady of Mercy College, Heidelberg to stage our annual junior and musical productions.
Active involvement in the Arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. We don’t believe that Arts education should be based purely on its social or economic benefits, but because it expands the mind and soul. Furthermore the Arts provide students with problem-solving skills, innovative mindsets, creative expression, communicative attitudes and inspiration. It provides students with the space to nurture their own creative habits of mind: imagination, curiosity, discipline, resilience and collaboration.
The program of compulsory Outdoor Education camps is viewed as an integral part of the College’s curriculum at Year 7 through to Year 9. The Outdoor Education program aims to provide our students with enjoyable learning situations to promote aspects of personal development such as self-esteem, resourcefulness, leadership, tolerance, determination and responsibility. They focus on trust, teamwork and co-operation, while developing and encouraging positive attitudes toward environmental appreciation and protection and the encouragement of conservation practices.
It is College policy therefore that each student attends these camps and activities and non-attendance will only be permitted in serious circumstances such as in the case of genuine prolonged illness.
