Principal's Updates 4 April 2025

Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,

At our opening assembly in Term 1, I challenged our community to embrace one simple but powerful idea for 2025: Growth. I reminded our students and staff that growth is not about perfection—it’s about being just a little better than yesterday. Whether it’s in our learning, leadership, relationships, or faith, growth comes when we are willing to be just 10% braver, to step outside our comfort zones, and to live each day with a Marist HEART.

We reflected on the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young man whose ordinary life was made extraordinary by the way he lived with humility, excellence, acceptance, resilience, and trust. His story reminds us that greatness begins with the small, everyday choices we make - and those choices, repeated with intention and courage, shape not only who we become, but the kind of community we create together.

2025 Marist Basketball Carnival
Last night we celebrated the success of the Marist Schools Australia Basketball Carnival, where we welcomed 22 Marist schools from around the country. This year, the teams brought a new energy to the competition and reflected the inclusive, spirited nature of our Marist family. In the words we shared at the opening: “We are not made for comfort, but for greatness. When we play with heart, we honour one another, our gifts, and the God who gave them to us.” It was a week of joy, teamwork, and deep connection across schools.

My congratulations to our coach, Mr Brett Atley and the Basketball Team on winning the Marist Basketball Carnival. It was a great achievement and the team played exceptionally well against St Gregory’s College, Campbeltown in the final. On behalf of our community, my thanks to Mr Ben Reynolds and his team for coordinating this event. It was a wonderful celebration of what it is to belong to the Marist family. My first carnival was over 25 years ago. I was surprised to see some of my past students from Lavalla Catholic College, in Traralgon, return to this event as parents of boys and girls who were playing in the tournament.

Library Opening
We have begun the exciting transition into our newly refurbished Library - a bright, modern space that will soon be a central hub for learning, collaboration and quiet study. We are grateful to everyone who has helped make this transition smooth and purposeful.

Term 2 Facilities Update
Looking ahead, Term 2 will see the completion of our renovated Chapel, a space that invites us to gather in prayer, reflection and celebration of our shared faith. Early works on the flyover bridge (connecting Ardmara and Hemitgae buildings) will also begin next term, improving accessibility and linking key parts of our campus more safely and efficiently.

75th Anniversary Celebrations
This year marks 75 years of Marcellin College. It is a time to honour the rich legacy of those who came before us, and to celebrate the vibrant community we continue to grow today. We look forward to sharing a range of events with you throughout the year - please see scroll down the newsletter for further details.

AGSV Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the AGSV Swimming Carnival last week. Your discipline, effort and teamwork were a credit to the College. We look forward to celebrating your achievements at our upcoming presentation night.

Easter Liturgy – Being 10% Braver
As we gathered for our Easter Liturgy, we reflected on the message that is Easter. My thanks to Ms McCarthy and Mr McNulty for a powerful liturgy. At the end of the liturgy, I challenged students to use the message of the liturgy and to work in Term 2 on becoming 10% braver. I will expand on this in Term 2 as we look at what bravery looks like in learning and in life - how excellence isn’t about perfection, but about consistently choosing to take small, courageous steps forward.

Carol Dweck speaks about excellence as not saying we need to be perfect; it's about striving to be just a little better than you were yesterday by taking brave steps. I asked students to ask “What would striving for excellence look like if you were 10% braver today?” Whether it’s raising a hand in class, trying something new, or reaching out to someone in need - bravery fuels growth and growth leads to transformation.

Easter Message
As we move into the Easter season, we are reminded of the ultimate message of hope: that light overcomes darkness, and that new life is possible even after the most difficult of times. The Resurrection calls each of us to live with renewed purpose and courageous love.

May this Easter be a time of rest, renewal, and reflection. May it remind us that even the smallest acts of bravery and compassion can lead to extraordinary growth.

Wishing you and your families a peaceful, safe and blessed Easter.

God bless,

Marco Di Cesare
